Have you ever caught yourself thinking…
"I'm too old to start."
"My knees aren't what they used to be."
"I have arthritis, Parkinson's, diabetes (or another health condition) so exercise probably isn't for me."
If that sounds familiar, I have some good news.
It's never too late to start moving, and your body can benefit at any age.
As a Senior Fitness Instructor in Edinburgh, I've had the privilege of working with people in their 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. Many of them were nervous when they came to their first class. Some hadn't exercised for years. Others were living with long-term health conditions and worried they'd slow everyone down.
Today they're stronger, more confident and, perhaps most importantly, enjoying themselves.
One of the things I love most about the human body is its ability to adapt.
Even gentle exercise can help you:
Improve strength for everyday tasks
Increase balance and reduce your risk of falls
Build stamina so walking and climbing stairs feels easier
Improve flexibility and mobility
Support heart health
Help manage conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, diabetes and many other long-term health conditions
Boost mood and confidence
Sleep better
Stay independent for longer
You don't have to become a marathon runner.
You simply need to start moving a little more than you do now.
Many people believe exercise only "counts" if it's hard work.
I completely disagree.
Five minutes is better than no minutes.
Ten minutes is brilliant.
Consistency always beats perfection.
The secret isn't doing one huge workout. It's finding movement you enjoy and making it part of your week.
This is probably the biggest concern I hear.
The truth is, everyone starts somewhere.
My classes are welcoming, friendly and completely judgement-free. We all work at our own pace, and I always offer options so you can exercise safely and confidently.
Whether you're returning after illness, managing a long-term health condition, recovering from surgery or simply haven't exercised in years, you're welcome.
If you're not quite ready to come to a class, why not start from the comfort of your own home?
I've created a free 13-minute workout using everyday household items (yes... tin cans!) that is suitable for many older adults, beginners and people looking for a gentler workout.
